About the Founder

Miki Watanabe is the founder of “Watami” which has expanded it’s business to the food service industry, nursing industry, Food catering business(for the elderly people), Agriculture, and Environment business under the slogan of “To be the group to collect the most ‘Thank you’ on the planet.” By expanding the business, Watami has constructed original sextiary industry.

As an individual, he held various posts such as a chairman of the hospital in Osaka, and “Japan Business Federation”, a member of “Education Rebuilding Council”, “Kanagawa Prefectural Board of Education”, “Japan Sumo Association”, and an advisory council for “Japan Tourism Agency”.

Now, he takes a role as a chairman of the Junior-high/High School in Tokyo, and also a chairman for the three different types of Public Interest Incorporated Foundation, such as “School Aid Japan” which supports the education for the children in Cambodia, Nepal and Bangladesh, “Minnano Yume wo kanaerukai” which supports the people’s dreams to be come true, and “Save Earth Foundation” which supports to build up the recycling-oriented society.

In 2011, he runs for Tokyo gubernatorial election. He gained more than million votes from the citizens in Tokyo, but was defeated. In the same year of June, he was formally inducted into the counselor of the reconstruction of Rikuzentakata in Iwate prefecture, which was a stricken area from the earthquake.

In 2013, he runs for the Upper House election, and was elected by gaining 104,176 votes.

Now, he started to focuses on supporting and bringing up the small and medium-sized enterprises, the small business and also venture business. He works for the growth of real phase of the economy with the top priority.

Oct 1959 Miki Watanabe was born in Yokohama. When he was 10 yr old, his father liquidate his company and that incident determined young Miki to become a president when he grown up.

Mar 1982 Miki graduated from Meiji University. After he graduated, he worked for the accounting company for half a year to learn financial affairs and accounting skill which will be needed for the company management.He used another year to work as a courier to earn 3 million yen for the fund.

May 1984 Miki founded Watami Inc. He started up his own business as a franchise owner of the restaurant called “ Tsubohachi” that was on the verge of failure.

May 1986 Miki established Watami Co.,Ltd. In 1987, changed the company name to “Watami Foodservice Co.,Ltd.” In 2005, Watami Foodservice Co.,Ltd. restructured its establishment into a holding company of collective business and changed the company name to Watami Co., Ltd.

Apr 1992 Watami Co.,Ltd. opened it’s original restaurant called “Watami”
Mar 2000  Watami Co.,Ltd. Listed with first section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange.
Apr 2002   Watami Co.,Ltd. founded Watami Farm Inc. and started organic agriculture in Sanbu in Chiba prefecture.
Mar 2005 Watami Co.,Ltd. Started nursing industry
Jul 2008 Watami Co., Ltd. Started Food catering business for the elderly people by the acquisition of all the stock of Takushoku Co.,Ltd
Jun 2009 Miki inducted into the Chairman CEO.
Feb 2011 Miki inducted into a part time director supreme advisor. On the same year of April, he turned to be a part time chairman.
Apr 2011 Miki runs for Tokyo gubernatorial election. He gained 1,013,132 votes from the citizens, but was defeated.
Jun 2011 He was inducted into the counselor of the reconstruction of Rikuzentakata.
May 2013 Miki expressed to run for the Upper house election.
Jun 2013 Miki resign as a part time chairman.
Jul 2013 Miki runs for the Upper house election, and was elected by gaining 104,176 votes.
